Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova

Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova is a research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. She is currently working on future trends in nuclear proliferation. Her research interests include nonproliferation issues in the former Soviet Union and Iran’s nuclear program. A native of Kazakhstan, she is a graduate of the Monterey Institute of International Studies and has worked for the United Nations Development Programme in Kazakhstan and as an intern at the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs in New York.

The Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, located 9 miles from Belgrade, is Yugoslavia's oldest nuclear research institute. Established in 1948 as the Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, its efforts supposedly included an attempt to build a Yugoslav nuclear bomb. For almost 45 years, it collected Yugoslavia's and Serbia's radioactive waste.
