James Goodby is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. He has taught at Stanford, Georgetown, Syracuse, and at Carnegie Mellon, where he is a distinguished service professor emeritus. His career spanned 35 years in the U.S. Foreign Service and included several assignments dealing with nuclear issues including the START treaty, what became the Helsinki Accords, and five ambassadorial rank appointments including ambassador to Finland. He is the author of At the Borderline of Armageddon: How American Presidents Managed the Atom Bomb.
