John Hendrix's illustration titled "Doomsday" was 1 of 500 illustrations chosen by the Society of Illustrators to be featured in their newest compilation, Icons & Images: 50 Years of Extraordinary Illustration. Hendrix's "Doomsday" was featured in the January/February 2007 issue of Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The images for the collection were chosen by a committee from a pool of 25,000 images featured in annual magazines since 1958.
"Drawing for a living is always enjoyable, but being able to make a bizarre and imaginative drawing while also serving the greater mission of the Bulletin is really as good as it gets in our business," said Hendrix. "Since publication, the image has been often referenced by other art directors, calling about new potential disasters."
According to Hendrix, "Doomsday" has won numerous awards and remains one of his favorite commissioned images.
Hendrix is a graduate of the University of Kansas and the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has taught at the Parsons School of Design and is currently teaching undergraduate illustration at Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to the Bulletin, his illustrations have been featured in Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, to name a few.
